The Nicola Water Use Management Plan

The Nicola Water Use Management Plan is the result of a community-led planning process. This process began in late 2004 and consisted of a plan initiation phase (Phase 1), plan development (Phase 2), plan evaluation (Phase 3) and review by the community, government and stakeholders. A draft plan was completed in March 2009 and a year later, the Plan has been submitted to the provincial government for adoption.

The Nicola Water Use Management Plan (Nicola WUMP) was developed by a diverse group of people seeking solutions to long-standing water issues. The planning process came about in response to a desire to ensure that the future water supply would be divided equitably among all water users balancing the watershed’s social, economic, traditional and ecological values.

Other Water Management Plans

Living Water Smart A number of water management related planning processes have taken place or are underway in the province of British Columbia. Among them are the Township of Langley’s and Cowichan Regional District’s water management plans. There has been a growing recognition that water quality, water quantity and water management issues are beginning to have impacts on the short and long term sustainability, economic viability and well-being of many communities and regions of British Columbia. Steps are being taken to begin to address the issues in the Nicola watershed as well as elsewhere.

In June 2008, the government of British Columbia unveiled its vision for and commitment to ensure that BC’s water stays healthy and secure.  This vision is outlined in a document entitled "Living Water Smart."
